The Tió de Nadal (roughly "Christmas Log"), also known as "Tió" (trunk or log, a big piece of cut wood) or "Tronca" ("log") and popularly called "Caga tió" (pooping or defecating log in English), is a character in Catalan mythology relating to a Christmas tradition widespread in Catalonia (North-East Spain).
The form of the tió de Nadal found in many Catalan homes during the holiday season is a hollow log of abou…

Christmas... :-) We had a time of our lives tonight, with lots of fun and laughter, and loads of useful information about Christmas customs and dishes in many countries of Europe.
Paulina prepared a presentation about the Catalan custom of
Tió de Nadal. We put on the
barretinas and beat Tió to get our…

Christmas 2009
Of all those Christmas presents
What I love most is snow...
Its whiteness, crispness, presence,
For all, for friend or foe...
Of all those Christmas feelings
The best is that of peace
With my own mind... Yes, really!
So, let it come, oh please!
Of all those Christmas dishes
My favourite is black tea...
So my sincere wish is
That Santa'd bring some t'me :-)
Of all those Christmas visits
I only crave for thee...
So, come for Christmas, with its
White snow, mind peace, black tea…

I'm grateful to Paulina and Chavera, who turned up in-world for my Lodz presentation of Phonetically Augmented Virtuality last Sunday. I wish we'd had more time to talk, but I had to demo the blocks and stuff, so picking your brains about SL pronunciation learning was only part of the scenario...
My Lodz presentations (there was also a separate introductory workshop on Friday: see details on my
website) were generally well received. A…

Our last Wednesday session was somewhat erratic: lots of audio problems of all kinds, as well as RL distractions. But we did manage to do some work with word-final devoicing, which is a pronouncing problem for learners of many native tongues, such as German, Russian or Polish. We first reviewed the old "devoicing story", which was originally introduced on April 1st 2009, so virtually none of those present last Wed could remember it. The story is about water on Earth, adn it contains many words w…

"Several informants felt that a user’s personality contributed to their preference for voice or text: "I find that a lot of people who don't like voice are shy and lack confidence." Some felt that voice allowed offline extroverts to dominate online (cf. France et al., 2001): "If you introduce sound the whole ambience changes: the shy are revealed as shy, and the noisy start to dominate. (It is hard to type LOUDER than everyone else in the room!)". An educator said: "Text is sometimes much more a…

Tonight we did: (i) homework - the secondary word stress notecard turned out to be a bit too technical/difficult for many students, but may come in handy some time as a reference source, I guess :-), (ii) a little advertising campaign for Virtlantis by making short speeches about our favourite places. Here are some pronunciation problems which appeared in these speeches. The transcription system is explained here:

Welcome to all the new students tonight! Great to see so many coming!
We managed to do two of the planned three activities... Paulina's silent phone worked just fine (despite slight technical problems with private chat), and then we had a look at some <-mb> words which are pronounced without /b/, such as "climb" (the list below; entire notecard on SLactivities). Lots of all kinds of problems here: not only the /b/-less pronunciation, but also troublemakers, such as "tomb" /tu:m/ or "womb"…

I'm not certain how you see the title of this blogpost on your screens... With three Polish-accented letters it may be quite a challenge to your graphics card :-). I was recently asked about this strange name of the city in central Poland (in which I'm going to have a plenary presentation on Second Life pronunciation teaching in exactly three weeks, BTW). Below is part of my answer, with a snapshot of the this word from John Wells's pronunciation dictionary. Hope this helps (or vice versa :-)…
