AN OUT-WORLD MEETING PLACE FOR MEMBERS OF SECOND LIFE ENGLISH

Last Wednesday we had the last British/American differences session. We talked some more about the 16 recordings used before (8 British and 8 American). Yoghurt drew student's attention as the case where the /r/ sound was rather weak, so it was not immediately clear if the pronunciation is American or British... Then, we tried another activity: to make full sentences with the 60 Br/Am contrasting words only, so that each word in such a sentence could be pronounced in the two accents. Some examples follow below. Finally, we agreed that the next session will be devoted to word stress in English, an area of many pitfalls and problems for EFL learners.

Example sentences with ALL words taken from the list of 60
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Your work lasts all year long.
2. Never order important service here!
3. Government members always hear important information.
4. Never ask what your government hear!
5. Important information often lasts long...
